Our preschool and pre-kindergarten programs are focused on play-based, developmentally appropriate exploration of social and academic topics within a rich, engaging, and nurturing environment. We feel it is inappropriate to follow a program of strict academic acceleration with young gifted children. Our students are typically verbally advanced and very receptive to discussion and exploration of complex topics, yet are not ready for a highly structured academic environment. Consequently, at these levels, we do not expect students to produce the schoolwork of an older child, we do not assign homework, and we rarely send home evidence of academic accomplishments.
Our program offers brief and playful academic experiences that focus on discovery, on high-level thinking and on creative problem solving as opposed to rote learning. Our program allows all of our students to develop and explore interests in a variety of academic and non-academic areas. Those children who show an interest in more advanced schoolwork or traditional academic subjects are given opportunities to advance these skills and interests; however, our early childhood students are not expected to follow a rigid academic ladder of skills or to show mastery in academic areas. These aspects of school can wait until later; preschool and pre-kindergarten should focus on the joy and playfulness inherent in childhood.
We provide our youngest students with a developmentally appropriate program, a nurturing staff and a stimulating environment that is physically and emotionally safe. In serving the needs of gifted children, Quest Academy goes beyond other preschools by:
- allowing the children to progress at their own, often accelerated, rates of learning,
- recognizing and accommodating the discrepancy between a gifted child's intellectual and socio-emotional development,
- providing an appropriately differentiated curriculum designed to address the needs of gifted children and their unique characteristics, abilities, and interests, and
- providing a peer group of children with similar interests, skills, and intellectual capabilities.
We offer the Preschool program for three year olds, and the Pre-Kindergarten program for four year olds.
Quest offers a part-time, five days per week preschool program for three year olds from 8:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Lunch is part of this program (children bring their lunch or purchase a school lunch). We also offer a “Stay and Play” program from12:00-3:30 (limited availability). We dismiss at 2:45 on Wednesday in accordance with the school-wide schedule. At the pre-kindergarten level the program is five days per week from 8:30 until 2:45. Our Pre-Kindergarten students are also able to participate in our Extended Day program. Preschool students can participate in Extended Day on a case by case basis.
