Positive Discipline Presentation

Posted: July 26, 2012

Dear Quest Academy Parents:

With great support from our Parent-School Association (PSA), we have arranged for two wonderful opportunities for you to learn about a disciplinary approach whose underlying attitudes are rooted in problem-solving that encourages cooperation (as opposed to control and punishment).

We encourage our parents to learn about the “Positive Discipline” approach that is rooted in extensive research and thought initially brought forth by psychologist Alfred Adler, who in the early 1900’s wrote on parent education, advising parents to “train a child to be and feel an equal part of the family.” To some degree, Positive Discipline is an extension of Adler’s work on parent education in that one of Positive Discipline’s main premises is that “children just want to belong and matter.”

There are two possibilities for parents to learn more. An initial, excellent foundation parent education course will be led by Certified Positive Discipline Lead Trainer Dina Emser on Tuesday, August 21 at 7 p.m. at Quest Academy. You should know that Dina will spend the entire next day working with the Quest Academy faculty in an all-day workshop. Earlier this year, Director of Teaching & Learning Beth Blaetz, Middle School Life Coach Jacque Negus, Quest parent Catherine Gruener, and I had the opportunity to attend a two-day Positive Discipline workshop led by Dina. We are thrilled she will interact with our parents and teachers, the foundation of an effective parent-school partnership. Please make every effort to attend this meeting – this is a great way to start the school year. You will soon receive an “E-Invite” to rsvp for this wonderful Parent Education session on Positive Discipline. Please see the attached flyer on Dina’s Parenting session.

As follow-up or as means of additional information, we are also thrilled that Quest parent Catherine Gruener, who heads Gruener Consulting, LLC, will lead a seven-week Parenting Course on Positive Discipline beginning on Tuesdays from 4:30-6pm, September 11th-October 23rd right here at Quest Academy. Catherine is a certified Positive Discipline trainer. She also is a graduate of the Adler School of Psychology. We are thrilled that Catherine is offering this opportunity to our parents, who will be able to keep children in the Quest Academy After School Program. Please see attached Catherine’s flier on her seven-week parenting course.

I really encourage as many parents as possible to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to learn about a parenting and disciplinary approach that is based on kindness and firmness, dignity, and mutual respect.

With high hopes for a most positive 2012/13 school year,

Ben Hebebrand

Head of School
