Virtual Reality At Quest

The following communication was recently sent to our Spot Auction 2017 donors who funded our new Virtual Reality Lab, while we want to provide our entire community an update on the Lab that all Quest students are enjoying:

Thanks to incredibly generous donors like you at our most recent Night of All Knights Auction & Gala, all Quest students now have access to 10 all-in-one virtual reality desktops! We could not be more thrilled to offer Quest students this innovative way of learning!

Check out the recent photos of some students, faculty and trustees experiencing them for the first time:

Student using zSpace

Donor Report for October 2017

  • The desktops were delivered and set up the first week of school.
  • Teachers have been familiarizing themselves with the units at their leisure, while all faculty members received a formal training in the beginning of October and will receive a follow up training in December.
  • The formal training helped faculty better understand how the desktops will allow them to deliver instruction in an innovative manner.
  • Please enjoy a few grade specific examples:
    • Kindergarteners manipulated virtual letters, numbers and shapes
    • 1st graders extended their knowledge of biotic and abiotic factors while investigating different biomes
    • 2nd graders explored the impacts that humans have on their environment by investigating landfills and learning how to reduce, reuse and recycle through interactive virtual activities
    • 4th graders extended their knowledge of the scientific method by performing virtual experiments involving gravity
    • 7th graders made a three dimensional representation of their original epics.

More to come! Keep an eye out for updates throughout the school year.

Thank you again for helping to make our Virtual Reality Lab a reality at Quest Academy. Quest students are incredibly fortunate to have access to yet another innovative way to learn thanks to you!

Weather-related Reminders:

Cold and Snowy Days

Please make sure your send warm outerwear (including snow pants, boots, gloves, and hats) for your children during these cold and snowy days. Quest's policy states: "Recess and PE are important components of a child's day. Parents are directed to keep children home for the day if they are too sick to participate in recess or PE. If, however, the student has a physician's note stating that due to certain conditions (broken bones, walking pneumonia, etc.) the student must refrain from physical activities for a length of time, he/she will be excused. Excused students will observe or assist the P.E. teachers with the class. The outdoor recess policy is that all classes go outside if the wind chill is 0 or above. Anything below 0 will call for indoor recess."

Emergency Closing Policy
Under extreme weather conditions or general emergency, the Head of School may decide to close school for the day. He may consult with various individuals and contact Palatine District 15, but the Head of School will make the final decision. Family, student, and staff safety is the primary consideration in closure decisions. If District 15 closes school because of heavy snowfall causing unfavorable or dangerous road conditions, Quest Academy will also close. However, if District 15 closes because of extremely cold temperatures, the reason to close is often because many students use bus transportation, which might be unsafe. Since Quest Academy students are transported by car, Quest will not close for cold temperatures only. When Quest Academy remains open, all parents are expected to make their own decision if they feel safe transporting their children to and from school, and act accordingly. A decision to close school will normally be made by 5:30 a.m. of the emergency day. All families and staff will receive an automatically recorded emergency message notifying them of the closure.

Quest Academy has instructional hours far exceeding the required hours set by the State of Illinois. Therefore, adding additional days to the calendar as "make-up" days after a closure is not necessary and Quest will only consider adding back days if the number of closure days exceeds four.

Severe Weather and Emergency Notifications
Occasionally, inclement weather necessitates a "snow day" or we may need to cancel after school events. Quest uses an automated calling system to contact Quest families with updates concerning late start, closures, and cancellations. This automated process contacts people by phone, text, and email depending on the situation and the urgency of the communication. Please notify Quest immediately when there are changes to family contact information. We will be listed on the Emergency Calling Center and post a notice on our web site.

Lunch Policy for weather-related closed days

The policy of Gourmet Gorilla lunch delivery is as follows: "Due to nature of notification with snow days, we are unable to provide parents with credits due to weather related closures. This is the same policy that we enforce with sick days or absences, we do need at least 48 hours notice in order to credit."
