A few years ago, Quest tech administration decided that it was time to "Go Google" and utilize the amazing free collaborative tools that the Google-verse allows students and teachers. A year later- we took that a step further and went 1:1 with Chromebooks, providing every student in the middle school with their own device. Now, Quest Academy has one Chrome device for every student from 1st - 8th grade.
Google Apps for Education (GAFE) is an ever-evolving environment for students to collaborate, create, and produce on a variety of apps and platforms. GAFE includes: Gmail, Google Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Forms, Calendar, Google Classroom, Hangouts, Sites with access to YouTube and more. The ability to create, share, and present one's ideas using these tools is unmatchable on any other platform. Google Drive offers unlimited storage to students and teachers, so the idea of losing one's files has become a thing of the past. Recently, Google announced Google Classroom, a tool for teachers to easily share and allow collaboration to happen in their classrooms. These tools get updated constantly, adding options and tools in an ever-changing technology environment.
There is a reason the Chromebook became the best-selling device in the country in the U.S. in 2015. A favorite quote of Chromebook educators last year was "zero to web in 8 seconds." The moment you open the device you are engaged in your work, saving precious class-time, and not worrying about connecting to the Internet. By 2016, the devices being offered by Dell, Lenovo, and others are business-class quality, and have truly come into their own. Students from 4th-8th grade take their devices home, which provides them new opportunities digitally, helps them practice those digital citizenship skills, and also provides teachers new avenues for the evolving idea of homework.
The benefits of a 1:1 environment allow Quest to continually build strong Digital Citizenship skills. We support strong citizenship in our mission, and that mission shows brightly in our device policy. Make sure to check our documents page for all of our policies and important parent information.
